How To Layer With A Waterproof Parka Jacket

Written by Luke Green /

We’ve talked before about how layering for outdoor adventures isn’t just about throwing on your warmest jacket and rolling with it. Instead, thinking strategically with the right layering system is key to staying warm, comfortable and dry, even in the roughest conditions. To do this, you’ll need a combination of base, mid, and outer layers.

At Red Equipment, we feel strongly that performance and comfort can go hand in hand in each and every layer. We’ve carefully refined our performance clothing to ensure you’re not compromising on your key base and mid layers, and now our latest innovation, the EVO Pro Waterproof Parka Jacket, delivers the perfect final piece in your layering system. Tailored, toasty, and totally waterproof, this waterproof parka acts as your ultimate outer layer, keeping everything underneath dry and ready for your everyday adventures. Here’s how to make the most of it as you layer

Layering Basics

Before we dive into how you can make your waterproof parka part of the perfect layering system, allow us to go back to basics quickly. It’s no overstatement to say that layering is key to staying comfortable throughout the day outdoors, as the right layers allow you to quickly adjust to changing conditions, whether that’s a downpour or a sudden sprinkling of sunshine.

This might all sound quite technical, but a good layering system actually requires only three main components that you can add or remove on the move as the temperature changes or activity levels increase. These are:

  • A moisture-wicking base layer, worn close to the skin to keep you dry and prevent a chill.
  • An insulating mid-layer, trapping warmth while still allowing moisture to escape.
  • A high-performance outer layer, like the EVO Pro Waterproof Parka, that acts as a final line of defence against the elements.

Building Layers With The EVO Pro Waterproof Parka

Now that we’ve cleared up the fundamentals of layering, it’s time to work out how you can construct your layers around a waterproof parka jacket. Because ours is an incredibly technical garment, it’s designed to complement a variety of approaches to layering. The 15k-rated waterproof outer shell and breathable Sherpa lining mean that you can really adjust your base and mid layers (or leave them out entirely), safe in the comfort that you’ll still be covered.

Here’s how to approach things:

1. Base Layer

A moisture-wicking t-shirt will be the perfect base layer, keeping sweat away from your skin and offering lightweight warmth without the bulk. For everyday conditions, your base layer doesn’t need to be particularly thick for you to stay warm, as the super-cosy Sherpa fleece lining of the parka will add extra warmth. However, if it’s exceptionally chilly, long sleeves will be a good shout.

2. Mid Layer

Your mid layer adds extra insulation and plays a crucial role in keeping you warm. For it, think something like a thin fleece or a lightweight sweatshirt, both of which will fit perfectly beneath your waterproof parka. Should you get too warm, this is the layer we recommend removing or leaving out entirely, but it’s always good to know that the tailored cut and flexible construction of your jacket will allow for it if needed.

3. Outer Layer

Your EVO Pro Waterproof Parka is the outer layer that completes your layering system, with a completely weatherproof construction that protects the other layers and keeps you warm and dry. Its adjustable cuffs, peaked hood, and fleece-lined pockets add extra protection and insulation for the most challenging conditions.

Additional Layers & Accessories

While the layers outlined above will form your core system, carefully chosen accessories can make things even more comfortable. For chilly conditions, style with a beanie or fleece-lined trapper hat to minimise heat loss from your head. You can also easily stash gloves in the parka’s fleece-lined pockets for easy access if you need them.

However, one of the best features of the EVO Pro Waterproof Parka is that it will do a great job of keeping you covered even without added extras. The peaked and wind-baffled hood provides great coverage on its own, keeping your head dry and protected if you don’t feel like carrying extra layers (or forget them!).
