In our last blog, we took a quick look at Red Equipment’s brand new changing poncho range, covering all of the great features that both the quick-dry microfibre and towelling options have to offer. This time around, we’ll look deeper into which robe is the right pick for you, based on how each lends its particular features to different activities and travel preferences. Let’s get into it.
If your time outdoors tends to be fairly active, the quick-dry changing robe is a great fit. Convenience is the name of the game with this one, especially when you’re moving between locations or using it multiple times in a day.
The biggest advantage here is how lightweight and packable it is. You can throw it into a bag without thinking twice, and it won’t weigh you down or take up unnecessary space. If you prefer to travel light or need to save space for other essential gear (paddleboarding equipment comes to mind), then the microfibre changing poncho is a real winner for you.
It’s also very fast, drying you off quickly and then drying itself off once it’s been used, which is a real benefit if you’re in and out of the water more than once in a day. If you value portability, speed, and great practicality, this is a phenomenal choice.
On the other hand, the towelling changing robe leans much more towards wearer comfort, and you’ll notice the difference straight away. It has a soft towel feel to it, thanks to the soft cotton fabric we’ve used. It naturally feels warmer too as a result.
That can make a huge difference if you’re often dealing with colder conditions, or if you just prefer to stay in your changing poncho for a while, rather than rushing to get changed. If you’re after a more leisurely experience, it’s tough to argue with the towelling poncho.
The trade-off is that it’s bulkier and takes longer to dry than its microfibre counterpart. It’s not quite as convenient to pack away, and it’s better suited to more relaxed situations where you’re not constantly on the move. But if your priority is warmth and comfort over portability, this is definitely the stronger option.
When you put the two next to each other, the differences are fairly straightforward, and all that really matters is how you plan to use yours.
The microfibre poncho is light, quick, and easy to carry. It works if you’ve got an intense day planned or you’ve got limited space in your bag. The towelling poncho, on the other hand, is about comfort and relaxation. It gives you more warmth and that classic towel feel, but asks you to accept a bit more bulk and takes longer to dry off in return.
Both changing poncho options are designed to serve the same purpose, just in slightly different ways. We’ve purposely kept things straightforward, which makes choosing between them a lot easier than it might otherwise be. Just go with which one suits your typical beach day best.
